Nick Curran Benefit in Boston: April 24

New England friends will be throwing a cancer benefit for Austin-based musician Nick Curran at the Midway Cafe in Jamaica Plain on Saturday, April 24, 2010.

Originally from Maine, Nick Curran turned professional at the age of 19, touring in 1996 as a guitarist with rockabilly legend Ronnie Dawson. Since relocating to Austin, he has played with Wayne Hancock, the Fabulous Thunderbirds, and Kim Lenz and Her Jaguars, among others, as well as launching a successful solo career playing a raw mix of jump blues, R & B, rock 'n' roll, and punk. In 2004, Curran won the W.C. Handy Award for "Best New Artist Debut," and in 2008 he performed four songs on the HBO show "True Blood." Now, at just 32, he is being treated for cancer of the mouth.

On April 24, many of Nick's NE friends will gather to raise money for his medical bills and celebrate the music he loves. Featured are Johnny Carlevale and the Rollin' Pins, the Pinball Millionaires, and Amy Rose and her Troublemakers. Special guests Sean Coleman (the Swinedells) and Kevin Patey (the Ragin' Teens) will be performing as well.

Two of New England's top roots-music DJs, Easy Ed and DJ Derek, will be spinning before and after the bands, with a free dance lesson beginning at 8 p.m.

Raffle prizes (including CDs, a massage gift certificate, and more) will add to the fun. This is a big night for a great cause!
